You're right, of course. The "conventional wisdom" has been that he'll take a pay cut to stay in Detroit, but everyone else must pay full Hossa price. If he offers the Detroit discount to other teams, that changes everything. I still don't think he can take so much less that it changes things for New Jersey specifically, but I could be wrong, and in general the idea that he might take less to go somewhere that's not the Wings would throw all of this speculation out the window. Possibly even Hossa doesn't know what he's going to do until the actual offers start coming in. He turned down something like $9MM supposedly to go to EDM last year. Will he turn down $9MM from the Kings in order to take $6MM from New Jersey? Maaaaaaybe. It may come down to Hossa's own assessment of who his teammates are going to be and how long they are likely to stay together. Thus, his desire to stay in Detroit.

If Hossa will lower his $ standards to go to Detroit - who says he wouldn't take far less than the 8mil you suggest to go to NJ. Therefore NJ is a pretty interesting hypothetical destination for Hossa in this regard. Hmmm.
