2005 draft was slightly weighted based on results and draft positions from the last 3 complete seasons; Pens, Jackets, Sabres and Rangers had the best odds of landing the top pick (6.3%), but 10 other teams had a fair chance as well (4.2%). Nobody can deny the Pens have Orlando Magic/San Antonio Spurs luck; in addition to winning the Crosby lottery, they also sucked bad enough to get Mario with the first pick back in 1984…..Often better to be lucky than good….

Kopi was always projected as the 2nd or 3rd best player in that draft before draft day – the only thing holding him back was the Slovenian thing. People were worried that he’d be another Nik Antropov (who’s had a decent career, mind you) because most of his international play was in the the B and C pools at the juniors and they didn’t get a reading against the big seven.

As an aisde, I think people forget Burke did a lot of work in bringing about the Vancouver team the Kings are facing now.

All that said, I’ll focus on the part about the Kings. Anze Kopitar was the 2nd best player in that draft. And I for one was mad the Kings drafted the first Slovenian ever. Oh man was I wrong.

Calling that strategy the “Pittsburgh model” is ludicrous.

Burke is hilarious. But I would cry if he ever got hired by the Kings.
