Why does this headline bug me?

“Kings Must Face Best after Blowing Lead”

That’s the headline of Lisa Dillman’s article tonight. I think it bugs me because “the best” was not determined until a few minutes before it was determined who the best would be playing. St. Louis could easily have turned out to be “the best.” So it’s Vancouver. Oh no.

Their loss dropped the Kings to eighth in the Western Conference, meaning a first-round playoff series with the Vancouver Canucks, who had the most points in the NHL.

When you use an old story as your template for a new story, you not only have to change your headline, but you have to change the article’s “title”. The title is an HTML reference that is separate from the headline of the article, but which appears, for instance, as the name of the tab in the browser, and also in Google searches (in fact, the title is a key index in Google searches) and when your article is clipped by WordPress and others. That’s why the internet thinks the title of your latest article — which appears on the webpage as “Kings Must Face Best After Blowing Lead” — is “Kings Coach Darryl Sutter Calls out his Goalie.”

    Totally Off Topic:

    Thought you’d be interested to know that this site is blocked in China. JFtC, BoC, LAKI are ok, but apparently Quisp is seen as a threat to Chinese national security or a threat to the cultural harmony here.

    That’s a silly mistake. But what’s also silly is the idea that Vancouver is “the best.” Let’s face it: they faced the weakest competition overall in their division. They’re the only team to even make the playoffs. Compare that to St. Louis who beat out NSH, DET, and CHI, well, I know who I think is better.

    Besides, rivalry is good for hockey. Kings and Canucks should generate way more buzz than Kings and Blues, or even Sharks and Canucks. I’m personally stoked.

    Quisp over at JFTC you posted a post deadline chart that contained standings and goal rates. Have you updated that at all? I would love to see the end of season results.

      Do you mean the chart that showed goal-differentials under murray, and then under sutter? If so, that’s the menu item “game log”. I wonder if you’re talking about something else though.
