Duluth Native Forbort Still Maturing

Duluth Native Forbort Carries Potential, Still Maturing — The CW for Duluth MN Sports

Duluth native Derek Forbort was the tallest player listed at the Los Angeles Kings development camp, which ended on July 10, but team officials say he is still early in the maturation process. “He’s very immature physically, I think,” Los Angeles general manager Ron Hextall told the L.A. Times. “For his age he’s probably on par but he’s in school there with 20-, 21-, 22-, 23-year-olds.”

The former Duluth East defenseman has two goals and 26 assists across two seasons for North Dakota, and as a freshman he led Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) rookie defenseman with a plus-21 rating.

“It was a great feeling, to be drafted, but that’s just the start of it,” the former Greyhound said of being selected by Los Angeles. “You’ve got to work hard if you want to get to that level, and that’s where I want to get to.” Forbort told the L.A. Times he plans on returning to North Dakota for at least his junior season, perhaps even his senior campaign depending on what happens.
