In updating my reserve list today, I noticed that it had all the right information re Clifford and King, if only I had bothered to check it.

I believe the way it works is that for 18/19 year olds the first “year” of their exemption is the year in which they play their first game, and then at 10 games their exemption is reduced to 3 years from 4. But I will look it up.

Yep, Happy Birthday Dwight! That one took a little figuring. Lokti is even better with June 30th, final day of the season.

BTW the 18/19 yo kids clock starts ticking on game 10 of their season, same as the contract year burn clause.

I had (in my spreadsheet) King signing at age 19, which would have given him four seasons of exemption, but it turns out that — although he was in fact 19 when he signed — he signed in the calendar year 2009 which is the year in which King turned 20, which according to the CBA makes him 20 for the purposes of calculating waiver-exemption. (He signed in May and turned 20 in July.) This gives him only three years of exemption. The clock starts ticking (for 20 year olds) after they play their first professional game (for 18-19 year olds, the clock starts ticking with their first NHL game). King played in the ECHL, if I recall, in 2009-2010. That counts as “professional.” So the clock started ticking with 2009-10.

Which means, yes, King is no longer exempt, as of five days ago.

I also think King is no longer exempt. His third year went up June 30th.

That would leave Nolan and Lokti as the only forwards that are waiver exempt on the current roster.

I’m afraid I’m still not grokking the enthusiasm for signing Doan. In addition to the question of where to put him, I just don’t see Lombardi sinking a lot of money into Doan’s declining years.

But then again, my predictive/analytic powers have not been much to brag about. I was pretty certain that the Kings were not going to re-up Stoll.

You’re so right. Actually, the limit is 160 games (or three years) and Clifford has played 157 regular season games, plus 9 playoff games, and playoff games DO count (I forgot to add them in), so Clifford’s exemption expired a few games before the end of the regular season.

RW3. Lewis moves down to RW4. King/Nolan/Clifford is LW4, and whichever one doesn’t play that night is a healthy scratch. One (or two) of King, Nolan, or Clifford starts in Manchester until something I shall not name happens to Gagne inevitably. Richardson stays as the healthy scratch backup a la Drewiske.

If they are worried that 50/50 playing time at LW4 would hamper the development of King, Clifford, or Nolan I would send two down and keep Westgarth on to at least keep Richardson and Drewiske company and possibly give Lewis or Fraser the odd night off. Just spit balling
