This chart shows every player in league history who has scored 50 goals in a season at least once. As of 2013, there are 91 of them, Corey Perry and Evgeni Malkin having joined the club since I first made the chart.

I compiled the data originally for a post back in the Summer of Kovalchuk, when everyone was debating how much the Kings (or anyone) ought to be offering him on his UFA contract. The original post is here, and gives a (sorta) detailed analysis of the numbers; you will be referred back to this page for the most updated and fancified version of the chart.

The original post had three interesting brushes with fame. The first being that Dean Lombardi referred to it in a radio interview that summer when discussing the rationale for how big an offer he was willing to make. I got several emails at the time saying, roughly, “Dude, Deano is quoting you on the radio!”

The second is that I was contacted by a Canadian publisher of two hockey magazines (Hockey Calgary and Hockey Edmonton, I believe were the names, but don’t quote me) about republishing the data, and I happily granted them permission.

The third is that, subsequent to that, the Hockey News contacted me about republishing the chart in their 2011 season annual. I gave them permission, and the result was (1) a fairly beautiful rendition of the chart, and (2) an article that more or less made it sound like the whole thing was their idea and I just sort of supplied the data. But what were they going to say? “We saw this on a blog and thought it would be good to take credit for?”

(The Hockey News also paid much less than the much-smaller magazines did. Cheapskates.)

Anyway, here’s the chart, in all its glory. The x-axis shows a player’s age. At the far right (you must scroll) are columns for a player’s total goals, followed by columns indicating the number of 50, 40 and 30 goal seasons the player had. The footer shows the average output for each player age.

Click on the headers to sort. It’s fun to see which players were tops at which age. Try it you’ll like it.
