Kings 2013 Season Preview: x = 12 – y – 41*(z-5)/48

x = 12 – y – (z-5)/2 That was my prediction for the Kings in 2011-12. Where x = conference seed, y = number of 20 goal scorers, z = number of shoot-out wins. Results rounded to the nearest counting number. How did my little predictive formula do? Let’s see. 20 goal scorers: 4 (Kopitar, Brown, Williams,…

Why did the Kings lose Thomas Hickey? I’ll tell you why

I was sad to see Thomas Hickey go this morning. In an alternate universe, it’s Hickey and not Alec Martinez or Slava Voynov playing in LA with his name on the Stanley Cup. Does that sound crazy? Consider that Hickey’s injuries early on are what kept him from getting his “cup of coffee” early on,…

Kings Quickie Roundtable 2013

This was going to be a longer conversation, but we got interrupted by yesterday’s sudden flurry of activity, so I decided just to post what we have. The last time I participated in a proper roundtable of Kings’ bloggers, it was back in 2010 on Jewels from the Crown. The participants were RudyKelly (then of Battle of…

2013 Kings’ opening night line-up?

The 2013 season starts in 10-14 days. Camp starts in less than a week, I suppose. Anze Kopitar and Willie Mitchell sound like they’re out with knee injuries for at least a few weeks. Tyler Toffoli has been tearing up the AHL. Jonathan Quick either has just been cleared to play (surgery, remember?) or is…

Who will still be on the Kings in 2013-14?

2013-14, that’s this fall, by the way. The NHL and NHLPA have apparently agreed to allow 2 buy-outs per club for 2013-14. That’s two buy-outs that will not count against the cap. The point is to make it easier for teams to get below the presumed $60 million cap ceiling. I don’t know what other…

When playing the right way is wrong

It has often seemed odd to me that Dean Lombardi would draft players like Oscar Moller, or sign undrafted gems like Teddy Purcell or Matt Moulson, if he really expected them all to play like Mike Richards.

Is it really the case that every line has to be defensively responsible to the same degree and in the same way? Under Terry Murray, it often seemed like the first three lines were all designed to be the same, or at least, to play defense the same way.

How many prospects make it? How long does it take?

Short version: Two or three out of every ten picks will turn into a viable roster player. One, maaaybe two, of those will be someone special. And it takes two or three years from the draft for the player to develop, sometimes less, sometimes more. Long version: Class of 2000 (GM Dave Taylor) Alex Frolov…
